Alaska is a destination that conjures up images of glaciers, mountains, wildlife, blue ice waters-but photos don’t do this cruise destination justice. It has to be experienced. Over the years, the number of cruise lines offering Alaska cruises has grown, with most now offering land tour extensions as well. For the 2007 Alaskan season, even more options exist to explore this incredible destination, with cruise departures now readily available out of Seattle, Vancouver, Seward and Whittier.

The first lines to pioneer the destination, offering both cruises and cruise tours, were Holland America Lines and Princess Cruises. Holland America actually deployed its first ship, the MS Prinsendam, to Alaska in 1975. Royal Caribbean International began offering their first Alaskan cruises in 1990 aboard the Viking Serenade, and Celebrity Cruises followed in 1996. Carnival Cruise Lines also began sailing in Alaska in 1996 with their ship, the Tropicale, roughly half the size of the ship they now have sailing in Alaska.

The Alaska cruise is a major attraction drawing vacationers with its majestic scenery, gleaming glaciers, exotic wildlife, and Native American culture. Ships are normally on a seven-day excursion package to Alaska and they stop at four ports on their passage, visiting Hubbard Glacier or Glacier Bay National Park.
You may like to opt for an extended cruise-tour comprehensive package where you go by train around Alaska and it includes lodging and seeing the sights in Denali National Park.
Due to weather hindrances, cruises to Alaska are strictly restricted during the summer months from early May to Mid Sept. June, July and August are the peak seasons when the average daily temperatures reach up to 75 degrees Fahrenheit. The best time to sail is May and September as temperatures soar around 50 degrees. Luxury vessels and midsize ships sail from Vancouver, BC and Seattle. At both embarkment and disembarkment points, you are able to visit the ports of Juneau, Ketchikan and Skagway.

So you want to go to Alaska? Take an Alaskan cruise. The Alaska cruise adventure is one of the most popular cruise destinations in the world, and it’s easy to see why. Nature at its best beckons travelers from around the world.
Mysterious, fog shrouded banks trigger sensations of stepping back into time, and the whales… well, the whales are a unique treat to anyone who’s ever been fortunate enough to see one, let alone hear and watch them play in Glacier Bay.
An Alaska cruise will take visitors to see snow-capped mountains and towering glaciers. Passengers on an Alaska cruise will inevitably see a wealth of sea and wild life including sea otters, Orca and Humpback whales. Imagine seeing a bear feasting on salmon on shore or watch the playful antics of the sea otters while they float outside your cabin window. An Alaska cruise is the adventure and experience of a lifetime, one not to be missed if at all possible. From the luxury of a cruise line, you’re able to enjoy spectacular scenery from the comfort of a wide, spacious deck without having to worry about hotel rooms, rental cars or airplane travel from one airport to another. alaska.jpgAlaska is a seasonal, as opposed to year round, cruise vacation. Alaska cruising season generally runs from May through September, although some smaller ships start going out in April. Nonetheless, May and September are considered the best seasons, plus you can get lower brochure rates and the greatest discounts during these months.

I particularly like going on my Alaska cruise in May, before the crowds arrive. I have noticed that the locals are generally “friendlier” during that time because later during the season they are more than ready to see the tourist go home.

However, it is also a fact that in the Inside Passage ports, May is one of the driest months in the season. But later on in September is best to have less clogging of ports and better visualization during the cruise.

My favorite vacation included an Alaska cruise package

So where did you go for your favorite vacation? Did you go to another country or to the beach, perhaps? Did you fly, drive, or take a train? My favorite vacation, ever, was an Alaska cruise package that was bought for me by my favorite uncle.

When I graduated from college my uncle decided to reward me with an Alaska cruise package. I was a bit skeptical about this because I always viewed Alaska as a very cold place and I am not incredibly fond of the cold. I must tell you though, this was the best vacation ever.
